WORDfest Crawley - Family Day 2024

FAMILY DAY PROGRAMME

Time: 10:30am - 11:30am, Longley Room 1st Floor.

Hannah will introduce you to the world of the Stinking Sinking Swamp where her stories, Small! and Small Bites Back are set.

You'll meet a few unlikely characters lurking in the swamp and have the chance to invent your own.

Then you'll write and design a Swamp Creature Diary to tell your new creature's secret story! And, of course, you'll be able to ask Hannah anything about her books and being an author.

Please bring along your own pens/pencils and notebook or clipboard and paper.

Please arrive 15 minutes before the start of the workshop. The session will last approximately an hour.

Suitable for children aged 7 -9 years old, must be accompanied by an adult. Purchase tickets for both adults and children attending. By booking a ticket you are guaranteed a place, but there will also be drop-in spaces avaible on the day so if tickets sell out please still come along.

FREE event, but there will be donation tin on the day for cash contributions to help ensure we can continue to provide an annual Family Day.

Test your octopus knowledge — and maybe learn some unexpected facts — in a true-or-false Octo-quiz with The Octopus, Dadu and Me author, Lucy Ann Unwin; then think about some other animals you love to create some creature-centred comic strips!

Please bring along your own pens/pencils and notebook or clipboard and paper.

Please arrive 15 minutes before the start of the workshop. The session will last approximately an hour. This will be taking place in the Longley Room on the first floor of the library.

Suitable for children aged 9-12 years old, must be accompanied by an adult. Purchase tickets for both adults and children attending. By booking a ticket you are guaranteed a place, but there will also be drop-in spaces avaible on the day so if tickets sell out please still come along.

Join Matt as he reads his book, learn some interesting facts, then draw-along with Matt to learn how to draw Captain Looroll. Then have lots of silly fun with loo rolls to make your very own Captain Looroll!

Maria Leonard is an experienced special needs assistant and qualified makaton tutor. In this 30 minute storytime she will sign stories for all children to enjoy.

Please arrive 15 minutes before the start of the session. The session will last approximately 30 minutes and will take place in the Bill Buck room on the first floor.

Suitable for all children with additional needs and for young children who enjoy storytime. all children must be accompanied by an adult. Purchase tickets for both adults and children attending. Time: 2pm - 3pm, Top Floor/2nd Floor.

He’ll be sharing books featuring the most extraordinary animals, like sharks in the park, wellyphants, moonicorns and cats who bake cakes! You’ll get the chance to draw amazing animals with Nick and even help him invent some brand new ones!

Nick has now illustrated close to 300 books. They range from board books for babies to novels for young teenagers. He;s worked with authors including Julia Donaldson, Jeremy Strong, Michael Rosen, Giles Andreae, Kaye Umansky, Kes Gray and most notably Dame Jacqueline Wilson and he's also written around 40 of his own books. He is delighted to say that quite a few of the books have won prizes. Nick was the official illustrator for World Book Day in 2006 and he has a fellowship from Hereford College of Art. Nick is also a proud recipient of a gold Blue Peter badge.

Welcome to the quickest bedtime story you will EVER read! Little ones will be asleep in seconds… But wait! There are some VERY important things you must do first. Have you plumped up the pillows? And colour-co-ordinated the teddy bears? Getting ready for a story is a very important business, I’ll have you know...

Join author Louise Fitzgerald for an inventive and interactive story-time event, including a playful reading and some hilarious vocal warmups, to get you ready for the quickest bedtime story EVER!

Then you need to visit Old Crabby Island with Lucy Brandt and her hilarious Leonora Bolt: Secret Inventor series published by Puffin. Lucy’s author talk will include readings, fun-packed quizzes, utterly disgusting recipe suggestions and crazy inventing facts galore!
